Electric vehicle high voltage battery failure rates are low but expensive should they occur.
For example, Chevrolet Volts in excellent condition can be found for under $10,000. Battery failures are rare even on high-mileage Volts, but if they do occur, GM is currently quoting rates of more than $8000 to replace a single cell and recommends replacing all cells for more than $12,000. Obviously, no one wants to be in a position of having to spend $12,000 on repairs to a $10,000 car.
We are seeking to determine if there is interest in a protection plan to cover battery replacement on electric vehicles after the manufacturer's warranty has expired. Preliminary studies indicate with a sufficient number of members joining such a plan, full protection from battery failures could be provided at rates as affordable as $10 a month.
